School Programs

Education at Lockerly Arboretum All programs are integrated with the Georgia Performance Standards, the curriculum format for Georgia educators. Programs and field studies are available for pre K through college age students. Activities cover two major areas, earth and life sciences.

Earth science programs include fossil demonstrations followed by a fossil dig in our kaolin pile and making your own fossils. Older students make soil profiles using a combination auger and classify the soil using a sieve, soil maps and the Munsell color chart.

Life science field studies involve exploring the diversity of the Arboretum. We use the Arboretum as a living classroom by investigating the herb garden, hiking along the nature trails, scooping insect larvae out of the pond, discovering the life inside of a rotting log, visiting the greenhouses, making cuttings and rooting plants, use plants in traditional crafts, and other activities appropriate to the season.

One program of interest for students studying at the Worley Center is through the Georgia Adopt a Stream program. Students gain first hand experience with field science and understanding the importance of water quality.
